Work planned for the property—not pulled from a template.

Stockport is where our South Manchester and Cheshire patches meet, and it is a borough built on slopes. A great deal of the work here involves ground that falls—drives that rise to the house, gardens a metre above the pavement, and level changes that were dealt with years ago by whatever was cheapest at the time. Getting the levels, retaining and drainage right is most of the job; the surface is the part you see.

On sloping plots the gradient decides what is possible: how steeply a driveway can rise before cars ground on the crossing, how high a retaining wall can go before it needs designing properly, and where the water ends up once you have hardened the surface. We take levels at the survey and set all three out before quoting.

What we do in Stockport

The work this area actually asks for.

Local housing stock, access and ground conditions shape what makes sense on your property. These are the jobs we are called out for most often around Stockport.

Driveways on a slope

Drives that rise to the house without grounding the car

A driveway on a Stockport slope has to work as a surface and as a gradient. We set the fall from the crossing to the garage so vehicles clear it, break long rises with a level standing where there is room, and choose a finish that holds on an incline—block paving and tarmac both suit it better than loose gravel.

  • Gradients set from the crossing to the garage
  • Level standings worked into a long rise
  • Block paving and tarmac finishes for inclines

Retaining & levels

Holding back the ground properly

Where a garden sits above a drive or a patio needs cutting into a bank, the retaining does the real work. We build in masonry, brick or sleepers depending on the height, the load behind it and how the finish should look, with drainage behind the wall so water is not left pressing against it. Anything substantial gets assessed on site first rather than quoted from a photograph.

  • Masonry, brick and sleeper retaining
  • Drainage designed behind the wall
  • Steps and terracing across a level change

Drainage

Where the water goes when the ground falls away

Hardening a surface on a slope moves water faster, and downhill is usually somebody else's boundary. We plan the falls, put channels where the water needs intercepting, and route it to a soakaway or planted area that can take it—rather than to your own threshold, a neighbour's garden, or the highway.

  • Falls set away from thresholds and boundaries
  • Linear channels and interceptor detail
  • Permeable build-ups and soakaways where suitable

How we approach the work

A better finish begins before installation day.

We use the site visit to understand access, levels, existing construction and how the finished space will be used. That gives you a more meaningful quotation and gives the team a clear build plan.

Common questions

Stockport enquiries, answered.

If something here is not covered, call the Greater Manchester team on 0161 241 2042 and ask.

Which parts of the borough do you cover?

Stockport itself plus Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Heaton Moor, Marple, Romiley, Hazel Grove, Woodford and over the boundary into Poynton. Stockport sits between our two teams, so it is well covered from either side.

My driveway is steep. Can it be relaid?

Usually, yes—but the gradient shapes the design. We take levels at the survey, check that vehicles will clear the crossing and any threshold at the top, and recommend a surface that performs on the slope. If a gradient genuinely will not work, we would rather say so before you spend anything.

Do retaining walls need building regulations approval?

It depends on the height, what is behind it and what it is supporting. Low garden walls are routine; anything substantial, or a wall retaining a driveway or a neighbour's ground, needs proper assessment and sometimes design input. We tell you which category yours falls into at the site visit.

Who do I apply to for a dropped kerb?

Stockport Council handles vehicle crossings in the borough, and the application is made by you or on your behalf rather than through us. We flag it at the survey and set the driveway levels to meet the crossing correctly once it is in.

Will a new driveway send water into next door's garden?

Not if it is designed properly, which matters more on a slope. We set the falls, intercept water with channels where needed and route it to somewhere inside your boundary that can take it. That detail is part of the quotation, not an afterthought.
