Your local paving team

Work planned for the property—not pulled from a template.

Didsbury is the part of South Manchester we are called out to most. The housing is largely late-Victorian and Edwardian—bay-fronted semis and villas with generous rear gardens and frontages that were designed for a gate and a path rather than a car. Most enquiries here are about getting one or two vehicles off the road without stripping the front garden bare, or about making a long rear garden usable from the back door.

Older frontages come with details worth keeping: original tiled paths, stone steps, cast-iron railings and street trees whose roots sit exactly where the excavation wants to go. We survey those before quoting, keep what should stay, and design the surface water so a newly paved frontage does not push run-off toward your threshold or the neighbours.

What we do in Didsbury

The work this area actually asks for.

Local housing stock, access and ground conditions shape what makes sense on your property. These are the jobs we are called out for most often around Didsbury.

Driveways

Parking that does not cost you the front garden

A Didsbury frontage rarely has room to waste, so the layout matters as much as the material. We work out the shortest workable standing for the cars, keep planting where it earns its place, and use block paving or resin over a properly built base rather than a thin skim on the old path. Where the original tiled path or steps are worth keeping, we build around them.

  • One and two-car standings planned to fit
  • Original paths, steps and railings retained where possible
  • Block paving, resin bound and tarmac finishes

Kerbs & permissions

Dropped kerbs, permeable build-ups and the five square metre rule

Creating vehicle access over the footway needs a dropped kerb, applied for through Manchester City Council, and paving more than five square metres of front garden needs either a permeable construction or drainage to a soakaway or planted area inside your boundary. We set both out at the site visit so you know what is involved before you commit to anything.

  • Dropped kerb requirements identified early
  • Permeable build-ups where they are the right answer
  • Soakaways and planted run-off inside the boundary

Rear gardens

Long gardens with a step down from the back door

The classic Didsbury rear garden is long, narrow and a course or two below the threshold. Handled properly that becomes a terrace at door level, a step, and a path that stays usable in February. We build in Indian sandstone and porcelain, with sleeper or brick retaining where the levels need holding back.

  • Terraces set at threshold level
  • Steps, retaining and sleeper edging
  • Paths down the garden and along side returns

How we approach the work

A better finish begins before installation day.

We use the site visit to understand access, levels, existing construction and how the finished space will be used. That gives you a more meaningful quotation and gives the team a clear build plan.

Common questions

Didsbury enquiries, answered.

If something here is not covered, call the South Manchester team on 0161 241 2042 and ask.

Do you work in Withington, Chorlton and Burnage too?

Yes. Didsbury is the centre of that patch, and the same team covers Withington, Burnage, Chorlton, Heaton Mersey, Northenden, Sale and Cheadle. We do not go into Manchester city centre—the housing there is a different job and the access rarely suits how we work.

Do I need permission to pave my front garden?

Laying more than five square metres of impermeable surfacing in a front garden generally needs either permeable construction or drainage to a soakaway or planted area inside your boundary, otherwise planning permission comes into it. A dropped kerb across the footway is a separate application to the council. We cover both at the site visit.

There is a street tree outside. Is that a problem?

Usually not, but it changes the detail. Roots decide how deep we can excavate near the boundary, and the council will have a view on work close to a highway tree. We check it at the survey and design the build-up and crossing around it rather than cutting through roots.

Can you keep the original tiled path?

Often, yes. Where the original path, steps or a low front wall are in reasonable condition we build the new driveway around them, which usually looks better on a period frontage than replacing everything. We will tell you honestly if something is too far gone to keep.

How long does a typical Didsbury driveway take?

Most front driveways here run three to five working days once the old surface is out, depending on the area, the access and how much groundwork the base needs. You get an expected duration with the written quote, and we tell you if something on site changes it.
